Earth Hour to be observed this evening

ISLAMABAD: Lights will go off in about 7,000 cities around the world, including in Pakistan, for Saturday’s Earth Hour event, according to its organisers.

The event would be observed in more than 150 countries, organisers WWF said.

It would see world landmarks, including the Empire State Building, the Eiffel Tower and the Kremlin, switch off their lights for 60 minutes at 8.30pm local time.

People around the world would turn off all non-essential lights to raise awareness about environmental challenges and garner support for sustainable initiatives on the planet.

On Saturday night, darkness would fall over the planet in a revolving wave with people around the globe turning off their electric lights for Earth Hour, a movement organised by WWF to mobilise support for protection of the planet.

“The Earth Hour has always been more than just switched off lights. It’s about people from all walks of life coming together throughout the year to show what they can do to protect the planet,” said Andy Ridley, the co-founder of the movement.
