SC seeks plan for extradition of two fugitives from UAE

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court asked the interior ministry on Tuesday to dispatch a senior official not below the status of a joint secretary to apprise it about government’s plan for the extradition of two Pakistani fugitives from the UAE.

The government is seeking the extradition of Nauman and Nausherwan who are accused of murdering Nasrullah Warriach, chairman of the executive committee of the Pakistan Bar Council, in Lahore on Jan 9, 2012.

A court in Abu Dhabi rejected on Feb 4 this year Pakistan’s request for extradition of the two accused.

When a two-judge bench headed by Chief Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jillani took up the case on Wednesday, Deputy Attorney General Sajid Ilyas Bhatti told the court that the government still had the option to submit a fresh application for extradition before an appellate court in the UAE.

The court asked him to seek instructions from the interior secretary whether the government intended to file the fresh application.

Advocate Qazi Mohammad Amin, who represented the PBC, argued that after the cancellation of their passports by the Pakistan government the accused were illegally staying in the UAE and the case was lingering for quite some time.

The court adjourned the hearing till June 3.
