ISLAMABAD: The capital police on Tuesday found the corpse of a man from the same house where a car laden with explosives was recovered on August 31, and believe it belongs to the murderer of a lawyer.

The house belonged to Hammad Adil, who during interrogation, confessed to the assassination of Chaudhry Zulfikar Ali, the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) prosecutor in the Benazir Bhutto murder case.

According to Adil, the body was of Haris Khan, one of the four people involved in the assassination.

The prosecutor was assassinated on May 3 while going to the FIA Headquarters from his house in G-9/1. Four armed men intercepted his car near Dak Khana bus stop and opened fire on him with 9mm and 30-bore pistols.

As a result, Chaudhry Zulfikar suffered multiple bullet wounds and lost control of his car which then collided with a woman and resulted in her death on the spot.

Constable Farman Ali, the prosecutor’s guard belonging to the Frontier Corps, also fired at the attackers.

As a result, an attacker’s cellphone and pistol fell on the road, but all four managed to escape.

Initially, it was assumed that only one assailant had been injured by the constable’s firing.

However, the police later claimed that excess blood was found at different spots and during a DNA test, it was revealed that the blood was of two different people.

Quoting Hammad Adil, the police said during the ambush, Abdullah Omar Abbasi and Haris Khan were also injured when the prosecutor’s guard retaliated, but they managed to escape.

The police said the two injured were first taken to the Gilani Manzil located in G-15 where they were given treatment.

Later, Abbasi was shifted by the militants to the Quaid-i-Azam International Hospital in H-12, from where he was arrested on June 13.

On the other hand, Haris Khan remained at Gilani Manzil for a few days and was treated by Syed Mujahid Gilani, the nephew of Dukhtaran-i-Millat chief Asiya Andrabi, police said.

However, due to excessive blood loss, Haris Khan succumbed to his injuries a few days later. His body was then shifted to Adil’s house where it was buried in the lawn.

On Tuesday, the police, accompanied by an assistant commissioner, a magistrate and a medico-legal officer, went to Adil’s house and dug out the body. The remains were then taken to a hospital for legal process, including autopsy and DNA test, to establish identification.

Currently, all four people involved in the assassination have been identified namely Omar Abbasi, Haris Khan, Adil and Tanveer (the mastermind).

Earlier, the taxi used in the ambush was found from the Sabzi Mandi and fingerprints led to the arrest of two people including Tanveer, a native of Malakwal.

The two then disclosed the location of Omar Abbasi at the hospital, which led to his arrest.

However, neither Abbasi nor Tanveer had disclosed the involvement of Haris Khan and Hammad Adil in the ambush. One of the blood samples found at the crime scene matched with Abbasi’s, and the police are confident that the other sample would match Haris Khan.
